PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an escalator capable of precisely predicting and preventing in advance accidents wherein an article held by a passenger is nipped in a gap between a step face and a riser face of an adjacent step. SOLUTION: This device comprises step detection means 5 installed inside a skirt guard 14 and detecting passage of a specific portion of a step side face, a pair of article detection means 6 having a light projection part and a light reception part for detecting an article 11 located at a risky position adjacent to a riser face 2 of an adjacent step 3b in connection with the step detection means 5, safety riding report means 7 reporting a passenger holding the article 11, and a safety device control part 4 for making the safety riding report means 7 report the riding at a safety position away from the riser face 2 of the step 3b adjacent to the passenger when the step detection means 5 detects passage of a specific portion of the step 3 and the article detection means 6 detects the article 11 at the risky position of the adjacent step 3b.
