PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of sewing defects while providing a plurality of practical sewing modes, and to prevent waste needle thread by efficiently using needle thread. SOLUTION: A device comprises an optical sensor 15 to detect residual quantity of the needle thread 9, a touch panel 25 in which a desired sewing mode can be selected out of the plurality of sewing modes, a ROM 29 in which necessary residual quantity of needle thread necessary for carrying out each sewing mode is stored, and a control means 27 to determine whether or not detected residual quantity of the needle thread detected by the optical sensor 15 is less than the necessary residual quantity of needle thread for the selected sewing mode prior to start of sewing in the selected sewing mode, and warn insufficiency in residual quantity of the needle thread 9 by means of a display part 23, an alarm lamp 33, and an alarm buzzer 35 in a case where it is determined that the detected residual quantity of the needle thread is less than the necessary residual quantity of the needle thread for the selected sewing mode.
