PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing device that facilitates flux application to the rear side of a groove line where members to be welded are allowed to abut on each other and that is not upsized as a whole even being provided with two backing parts corresponding to different backing methods and low in equipment cost, and to provide a one-side welding machine which is not upsized as a whole and is inexpensive in equipment cost even in the one-side welding machine provided with the backing device. SOLUTION: The backing device 10 is provided with a backing part 11 for applying flux to the rear side of a groove line, a backing frame 17, a rack frame 21, and a flux recovery means 22. The backing part 11 includes a flux holding section, a support plate, one air hose, and an elevation guide 14 having elevation guide members which are arranged with a prescribed space apart longitudinally on both sides in the width direction of the air hose. The elevation guide 14 is formed in a manner that one end of each elevation guide member is fixed on the support plate and that each elevation guide member is inserted through a guide hole formed in the backing frame 17 and guided.
