PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide equipment and a method for manufacturing a square steel tube by which the square steel tube excellent in surface property is stably manufactured. SOLUTION: A surface inspecting device 11 for inspecting surface flaws of the square steel tube 24 is installed between shaping rolls 9 with which a circular tubular body 23 is made into a square steel tube 24 by shaping with square caliber rolls and a cutter 10 for cutting the square steel tube 24 into a prescribed length. A dewatering means is provided on the inlet side of the surface inspecting device 11. In this method for manufacturing the square steel tube, the causes of the occurrence of the surface flaws is specified on the basis of the form of the surface flaws and detected position which are detected with this surface inspecting device and concerned devices are adjusted so that the surface flaws are eliminated.
