<p>Provided herein are methods for introducing a polynucleotide into an extremophile, such as Pyrococcus fitriosis, by conjugation with a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Also provided are genetically engineered extremophiles, such as Pyrococcus furiosiis, that include an exogenous polynucleotide integrated into genomic DNA.</p>
