Methods and apparatus are disclosed for calculating the stiffness of a pole (10), such as a telephone or electricity pole, or a retaining wall or fence post, while the pole is in use. The calculated stiffness may be used to determine the theoretical maximum strength of the pole in order to decide whether the pole needs to be replaced. The method includes the steps of applying a first load to the pole, measuring the movement of the pole, partially de-loading the pole to a second load, measuring movement of the pole, and using the change in movement under the applied loads to calculate the pole stiffness.
