PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyimide film which is high in flatness and free from defective appearance due to wrinkles, cracks, splits, etc., by a simple apparatus without needing a both ends gripping device and a technique for adjusting in-plane orientation by controlling a draw ratio. SOLUTION: The solution of a polyamic acid, a polyimide precursor, in an organic solvent is applied on a support made of metal foil 10-100μm in thickness having a polyimide layer (B) 1-50μm in thickness and at least 300°C in heat resistance on the surface and heated with the support to at least 200°C to form the polyimide film with imidation completed substantially. The polyimide film (A) is peeled off from the support. In order to facilitate the peeling, at least one layer of the polyimide film (A) and a layer of a surface in contact with a polyimide layer (B) is preferably made of a polyimide resin obtained from a diamine compound containing at least 40% of 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-dimethyl biphenyl and a tetracarboxylic acid compound.
