PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-weight Mg<SB>2</SB>Si-based p-type thermoelectric material constituted of a material abundant in resources. SOLUTION: The p-type thermoelectric material comprises Mg<SB>2</SB>Si to which Na is added and Na atom is substituted at the Mg site of Mg<SB>2</SB>Si. The additive amount of Na of the p-type thermoelectric material is >0.5 at% and≤4.2 at%. The p-type thermoelectric material is manufactured by keeping a mixture for which Mg powder, Si powder and granular Na are each mixed by a prescribed ratio in the atmosphere where the temperature is adjusted to be equal to or higher than the melting point of Mg and lower than the melting point of Mg<SB>2</SB>Si and using a solid-liquid phase reaction method wherein Mg and Na of a liquid phase and Mg<SB>2</SB>Si of a solid phase coexist.
