801,406. Electrolytic production of aliphatic dinitriles. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 25, 1956 [June 6, 1955], No. 12658/56. Class 41. Aliphaticα: #-dinitriles CN(CH 2 ) 2n CN, where n is an integer from 2 to 5, are prepared by electrolysis in cells having smooth anodes of or surfaced with platinum or iridium of a solution, preferably in water, methanol, or ethanol, of #-cyanoaliphatic acids CN(CH 2 ) n and an alkali metal, ammonium, primary, secondary, or tertiary amine salt of the same acid, the dinitriles then being separated from the electrolysis product, as by distilling off the solvent, dissolving the remaining acid and salt in water, and separating the resultant solution from the insoluble dinitrile. Preferably the electrolysis is performed in a glass cell fitted with a reflux condenser at a temperature of 40 to 50 ‹ C. with a voltage drop which is increased from an initial 20 volts to maintain a current density of at least 10 amps./sq. dm. up to 200 amps./sq. dm., using non-reacting cathodes of carbon, graphite, platinum, copper, nickel, or steel, and agitating the electrolyte as by means of rotating anodes and a pump in addition to the agitation produced by evolution of hydrogen and carbon dioxide at the electrodes. Specification 677,516, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.
|
