PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of restraining generation of high voltage or high current, even if a discharge lamp in lighting is taken off near a resonance frequency. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 10 equipped with an inverter circuit 20 converting a voltage of a direct-current power source E into a high-frequency voltage to output by alternately putting on and off two switching elements 21, 22 connected in series and lighting a discharge lamp by the high-frequency voltage outputted from the inverter circuit 20 is provided with a current detection circuit 30 detecting current flowing in the switching elements 21, 22, and a first protection circuit 40 lowering voltage of a driving signal inputted into a gate of the switching element 22 and lowering current flowing in the switching element 22, when a current detected by the current detection circuit 30 is at or above a given value.
