<p>An inflator is disclosed. The inflator comprises a body portion for connection to a gas cylinder, where the body portion has a frangible seal and an inflation piston. The inflation piston has a pierce pin that pierces the frangible seal, thereby allowing compressed gas from the gas cylinder to flow axially through the inflator. The inflation piston is reciprocatably mounted within a piston cylinder, and comprises at least two upstanding arms that reciprocate within respective parts in the piston cylinder, and an upstanding neck that reciprocates within a longitudinal bore formed in the inflator. The upstanding neck includes a fluid passageway that is in fluid communication with the pierce pin, and a cam surface that engages with the upstanding arms to force the inflation piston toward the frangible seal. Upon initial piercing of the frangible seal, gas from the gas cylinder flows through the fluid passageway to further urge the inflation piston toward the frangible seal to thereby assist the pierce pin to more fully pierce the frangible seal.</p> |
