PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress movement blur which occurs when a moving image is displayed in a hold-type image display apparatus while suppressing reduction in the maximum luminance and contrast. SOLUTION: In an image display apparatus in which image display of one frame period is constituted of a plurality of sub-frame periods, the gradation level of an image signal in each sub-frame is set so that the relation between an input image signal and display luminance shows appropriate gamma luminance characteristics while suppressing an event that a time-wise center position of the display luminance moves in accordance with the gradation level of the input image signal. For example, the maximum gradation level is sequentially supplied from the time-wise center of n (n is an integer of≥2) sub-frame periods or a sub-frame period closest to the center to adjacent preceding and succeeding sub-frame periods within a range not exceeding a target luminance level and, at the point of time when the level reaches the target luminance level, the minimum gradation level is supplied to the remaining sub-frame periods.
