PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus constituted to avoid the occurrence of shock jitter on a formed image even when sudden load variation is caused on a belt device in charge of image transfer. SOLUTION: The belt device includes a belt member 71, abutting members 14A and 14B having a displacing function to impart tension to the belt member 71 while abutting thereon and to control the tension, and a detection means 60 detecting a displacing amount by the displacing function of the abutting members, wherein the traveling speed of the belt member 71 is adjusted by roller control according to the detected displacing amount, and the abutting members 14A and 14B are elastic bodies, and have auxiliary force generating means 93a and 93b generating auxiliary force that is force in the same direction as the repulsive force of the abutting member at an abutting part of the abutting member on the belt member 71 and damped when the repulsive force increases.
