PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex for coating paper, which is excellent in coating redispersibility related to coating operability, excellent in dry pick strength and wet pick strength, and excellent in print gloss. SOLUTION: This copolymer latex for coating paper is prepared by emulsion-polymerizing monomers (total amount: 100 pts.wt.) of 30-70 wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 0.5-10 wt.% of an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and 20-69.5 wt.% of other copolymerizable monomers, wherein the content of an alkali metal contained in a copolymer latex film is 17,000 to 25,000 ppm and the amount of potassium occupied in the alkali metal is within the range of formula (1): potassium/(total amount of alkali metal) =0.4-0.8.
