PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex for coating paper, which gives coatings excellent in leaving stability, low in viscosity on high shears, and high in viscosity on middle shears, has excellent coating workability on blade coating, and excellent in water absorption adhesiveness and white paper gloss. SOLUTION: This copolymer latex for coating paper is prepared by emulsion-polymerizing monomers (total amount: 100 pts.wt.) of 30-70 wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 0.5-10 wt.% of an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and 20-69.5 wt.% of other copolymerizable monomers, wherein the content of an alkali metal contained in a copolymer latex film is 17,000-25,000 ppm and the amount of sodium occupied in the alkali metal is within the range of formula (1): sodium/(total amount of alkali metal) =0.61-0.85.
