The invention relates to an absolute position sensor (10) with serial reading, that comprises at least one detector (3) capable of detecting transitions in a target pattern (2) present on a member (1) mobile relative to said detector (3). The sensor is characterised in that it comprises a shift register capable of storing a predetermined number of consecutive data from said detector (3), and means for comparing the value (5) of said register to a set (6) of predetermined values each corresponding to a position of the detector (3) relative to the target pattern (2).
