The method involves supplying a digital optical transmitting signal to an optical transmission network at the transmitting side end. The digital optical transmitting signal is detected at the receiver side end after passing through the optical transmission network. The characteristics of the spectrum of the digital optical signal is assigned to the transmitting side end of the transmission network and the dispersion of the transmission network with which the signal is impinged on the initial point of the risk area of the optical transmission network. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an optical transmission unit for realizing the method; and (2) an optical receiver unit for realizing the method.
