An interpolation processing unit detects an angle at an edge in an image; based on the detected angle, determines a pixel value of an interpolation subject pixel by a slant interpolation in a slant region where a slant edge exists; and determines the pixel value of the interpolation subject pixel by a vertical interpolation in a non-slant region where the slant region is excluded. An uneven sharpening unit carries out a sharpening process in a vertical direction with respect to a scanning line relatively more strongly for the non-slant region in the image in which the scanning line is interpolated by the interpolation processing unit than that for the slant region. This processing can ease the unnaturalness of a border defined between a slantingly interpolated portion in an edge with its gradually changing angle and a vertically interpolated portion.
