PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition excellent in coating film performances such as water resistance and finishing features such as smoothness of coated surface. SOLUTION: This water-based coating composition comprises a water-dispersible acrylic polymer particle (A), a reactive group-containing resin (B) and optionally a curing agent (C), where the polymer particle (A) has a weight-average molecular weight of≥1,100,000 and the value of absorbance not higher than 0.2 at the wavelength of 330 nm as measured with a spectrophotometer in the state of a liquid dispersion at mass concentration of 1.35% in 1,4-dioxane as the solvent.
