SUPPORT FOR PACKET DORMANCY IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICE

The disclosure is directed to techniques for indicating the status of a connection with a base station to a TE2 device. An MT2 device employing the disclosed techniques may include a processor to identify a loss of a connection with the base station, and continue to indicate to a data terminal that the connection exists unless a session-ending event has occurred. Release of the connection due to packet dormancy, loss of the connection due to fade, and loss of the connection due to a hard handoff are not necessarily session-ending events. Session-ending events are events whose occurrence indicates that connection is not needed or will not be available. An MT2 device employing the disclosed techniques may emulate a modem. The processor may indicate that connection exists by asserting a data carrier detect (DCD) pin, and that the connection is lost by deasserting the DCD pin. An MT2 device employing the disclosed techniques may override any received AT & C command.
