<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which positioning accuracy of a mirror installed in an illuminator and a mirror for folding reflected light from an original is improved, and an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image reader is configured so that luminous flux emitted from a light source is deflected by a plurality of illumination mirrors 212 and 213 and an imaging area on an original surface is irradiated with the luminous flux, and the reflected light from the original surface is folded by a plurality of reading mirrors 210 and 211 so as to form an image on a one-dimensional imaging device, and performs one-dimensional image reading by scanning in a main scanning direction and performs two-dimensional image reading by scanning in a subscanning direction orthogonal to the main scanning direction. Both end sides in the main scanning direction of the illumination mirrors 212 and 213 and the reading mirrors 210 and 211 are fixed by a pair of plate-like fixing members 121a and 121b.
