PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of efficiently preventing non-feeding jam of a thick and flexible recording medium while effectively preventing double feeding and continuous feeding caused by insufficient separation of the recording medium. SOLUTION: The paper feeder has a holder holding a friction pad and a paper feeding roller brought into contact with the friction pad, and separates and conveys a plurality of recording media one by one by making the plurality of recording media pass through a nip formed by bringing the friction pad and the paper feeding roller into contact with each other. The portion of the friction pad, upstream of a recording medium conveying direction from a point of contact at which the friction pad abuts on first when the friction pad is pressed toward the peripheral surface of the paper feeding roller, is formed as a proximity part. The proximity part is made to approach the peripheral surface of the paper feeding roller rather than the tangent of the paper feeding roller at the point of contact, and has a clearance gradually narrowed toward the nip when viewed from the recording medium conveying direction.
