793.289. Automatic guns. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. June 26, 1956 [July 26, 1955], No. 19786/56. Class 92 In automatic guns of the kind in which the propellant gases operate a piston or the like the passage of the gases from the gun bore to the piston chamber is regulated by a heat sensitive device to prevent an undesirable speeding up of the rate of fire as the temperature of operation rises. As shown in Fig. 2, the bore of the gun communicates with a cylinder 3 and piston head 4 through a channel 7 in the metal chamber-block 9. A plug 8, screwed into the block 9, restricts the passage of the gases to an annular area 6 which decreases if the plug 8 expands relatively to the block 9 due to a rise in the temperature of operation of the gun. To correct a tendency to over-compensation one or more small channels 11 may be drilled in the head 5 through which a portion of the gases will flow directly from the conduit 7 into the cylinder 3. The plug 8 is drilled externally with a blind hole 10 which is open to the atmosphere and which assists in cooling: it. A further embodiment is shown in Fig. 3 in which the restricted area 18 is between conical surfaces and the compensating channels 19 are cut either in the plug 17 or on the conical face 13 of the block 9. |
