PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material applying apparatus which can avoid the failure factor of a motor and the damage of a gear by releasing connection between a plunger and the motor when a material is supplied into a cylinder and also keep a pressure low in the cylinder, and to provide a material supplying method. SOLUTION: The material applying apparatus 10 comprises the plunger 12 for providing a discharge pressure of a viscous material M contained in the cylinder 11, a supply valve 16 for supplying the material into the cylinder 11, a ball screw 18 for reciprocating the plunger 12, the motor 21 connected to this ball screw 18 via a gear mechanism 20, and a nozzle 14 communicating with the cylinder 11 via a discharge valve 15. An electromagnetic clutch 23 is interposed between the gear mechanisms 20 and the motor 21. The material is supplied by interrupting the connection of the electromagnetic clutch 23 without reversing the motor 21 when the material M is supplied (refilled) into the cylinder 11.
