The apparatus has an irradiation device with gas-discharge lamps (6.1, 6.2) that are divided in two groups. The gas-discharge lamps in groups are switched in a row in paired manner, and connected to a common series reactor (14) so that the series reactor with the gas-discharge lamps forms lamp strands (15). The lamp strands of a respective group are switched parallel to each other between two conductors (S,T) of a multi-phase alternating current system i.e. three-phase system, and lamp strands of different groups are switched between different conductors of the current system.
