The method involves adjusting a control variable to a reference value, where the control variable characterizes combustion in a conducting cylinder (12a), and is obtained under the use of pressure signals. A value of a body sound variable is determined, where the sound variable characterizes the controlled combustion in the cylinder. The body sound variable is used as the control variable for controlling the combustion in a cylinder (12b). The control variable is again adjusted to the reference value, which corresponds to the determined value.
