Provided is the use of a CD81 protein or a functional fragment or variant thereof, in the manufacture of a medicament for enhancing the survival of neurons. Also provided is the use of a NrS1protein or a functional fragment or variant thereof (which can activate CD81), in the manufacture of a medicament for inhibiting proliferation of astrocytes. Also provided is the nucleotide sequence comprising the novel exon to NrS1.
