PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering operation device in an automobile capable of reliably performing the forward movement of a projecting part of a steering column in a collision of the automobile, and effectively mitigating the shocks given to a driver when the driver is subjected to the secondary collision against the projecting part of the steering column. SOLUTION: The steering operation device 3 comprises a steering column 5 projecting upward backwardly from a front side of a cabin 2, a column cover 13 which is supported by the projecting part of the steering column 5 to store a meter 16 therein, and an instrument panel 22 with a part 21 thereof arranged forward of the column cover 13. When an automobile is collided, the column cover 13 is moved forward together with the forward movement of the projecting part of the steering column 5, and when the column cover 13 presses the part 21 of the instrument panel 22, the part 21 of the instrument panel 22 is deformed by the pressure.
