PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a chain guide from excessively pushing a plunger, or contacting with a cylinder when a chain is excessively tensed. SOLUTION: In a device 1 for adjusting the tension of a chain which comprises a cylinder 7 fixed in a chain block 10, a plunger 8 which is inserted into the cylinder 7 so as to axially move and biased in the direction of projecting from the cylinder 7, and a chain guide 9 which is supported so as to be oscillable with a pivot 11 fixed to the engine block 10 as a center, and pressed by the end of the plunger 8 projecting from the cylinder 7 pressing the chain 6 by the chain guide 9, a circular oval hole 12 with the pivot 11 as a center is formed at one of the chain guide 9 and the engine block 10, and furthermore, a cylindrical pin 13 inserted into the oval hole 12 is arranged in the other engine block.
