A waste compacting device fitting within a lid of a bin (101) comprises a moveable element (107), and a rotatable member (111) operatively coupled to a threaded member (117). Rotation of the threaded member (117) in a first direction moves the element (107) into an operating position, and rotation of the threaded member (117) in a second direction moves the element (107) into a storage position. The element (107) may comprise a compacting base plate (109) with a flexible peripheral portion (113). The rotatable member (111) may be a wheel or handle or may be motorised, possibly solar-powered. The moveable element (107) may be a multiple threaded jack mechanism comprising a plurality of tubular elements (108) of increasing diameters concentrically arranged around a central threaded member (117). Alternatively, it may comprise a multiple scissors or 'lazy tongs' jack mechanism. The extendable jack mechanism may also be used in mining, building or vehicle maintenance. |
