An optical pickup (10) includes a laser drive circuit (105) which supplies a drive current to a laser (21), and a laser control circuit (100) which supplies a predetermined timing pulse for generation of relaxation oscillation in a laser drive current supplied to the laser drive circuit, the laser control circuit supplies a laser drive current I3 higher than a threshold value Ith to enable laser light to be output from the laser element, the laser control circuit setting the laser drive current I1 to a level lower than the threshold value on the basis of the timing pulse. During a period B the drive current is reduced to below the laser threshold current for time T1 before the current pulse during period C. This increases the peak output of the laser from relaxation oscillation and reduces laser average power. This also reduces temperature effects on the laser and optics. |
