An electrical circuit for receiving data in the form of bit-representing input pulses and delivering an output representing the remainder produced by dividing said data by a predetermined modulus (four), comprises at least two counting circuits operable independently to count bits of said data, including switching means for intermittently connecting a denomination of one of said counting circuits to the other counting circuit, so that the count of said other counting circuit is modified in accordance with the value registered in said denomination. The data comprises a succession of binary numbers appearing in parallelform on leads 43 and 44, Fig. 1a, the pulses representing each number being initiated by the depression of one of a set of nine keys and representing the number of one-bits in the binary coded form of the key-value, and has its units denomination pulses passed on lead 43 via an inverter 12, Fig. 1b to a first counter comprising cascade connected triggers 15 and 16, and its twos denomination pulses passed on lead 44 via an inverter 13 to a second counter comprising a trigger 17. Thus on each key depression pulses representing the number of one-bits in the binary coded form of the key value are entered into the counters where they are accumulated independently modulo 4. At the end of the succession of numbers a relay R1, Fig. 1b is energized, coupling the twos denomination, trigger 16, of the first counter with the second counter via a cathode follower 14 and a coincident gate 18, resulting in the application of a further pulse to the second counter, trigger 17, if trigger 16 is " on " (left-hand side conducting). The final result is that the potentials of leads 49 and 48 represent in the binary scale the required remainder which can be entered into a receiver 11 (for example a printer), to which the key values are transmitted, for checking purposes. In practice, the number source, shown as keys in Fig. 1a, would probably be direct from a computer.
