Internal combustion engine including plural cylinders, and control method for the same

A control apparatus is described which controls operation of an internal combustion engine including plural cylinders and a variable valve system in which the valve opening characteristic is varied. A control portion controls operation of each of the plural cylinders, so that torque generated in each of the plural cylinders is controlled such that a difference between the torque generated in each of the plural cylinders and reference torque is in a predetermined permissible range. The internal combustion engine further includes a catalyst that purifies exhaust gas, and the control adjusts both of the fuel injection amount and the ignition timing when the catalyst has deteriorated, and the control adjusts only the fuel injection amount the catalyst has not deteriorated.
