Spin dyed cellulose acetate filaments are produced using a dyestuff of the general formula: <FORM:0857130/IV(a)/1> wherein the nucleus A can contain one or two substituents chosen from chlorine atoms and methyl groups. The cellulose acetate may be a secondary acetone-soluble acetate or the triacetate. The dyestuffs may be produced by heating perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic acid or its anhydride with aminobenzene or aminobenzene in which the nucleus is substituted by methyl groups or chlorine. In an example, 100 parts of a secondary cellulose acetate, 400 parts of acetone and 1 part of the dyestuff made as above using aminobenzene are ground in a ball mill until the suspension contains no pigment particles larger than one micron and the suspension is dry spun to form red filaments fast to light and all normal treatments.
