810,483. Surgical dressings. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd., T. J. Sept. 20, 1956 [Sept. 20, 1955], No. 26915/55. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A surgical dressing comprises a thin flexible film placed in contact with the body, over which is disposed a layer of absorbent material, the film comprising two layers each having a plurality of openings separated by solid parts, and means holding the layers together so that the solid parts of one cover the openings of the other. The openings 24, 26, Figs. 2, 4 and 6, in each layer 22, 23, are square or circular (not shown) and form a similar pattern in each layer 22, 23. Exudate from the wound passes through the openings and between the layers 22, 23 to the absorbent material which may be sewn or stuck to the film. Alternatively, columns of cuts 43, 45, Fig. 15, may be formed in each layer, the layers being superimposed so that the cuts 43 in one layer cross the cuts 45 in the other layer at right-angles. The patterns formed by the openings may be dissimilar in each layer. In another construction, Figs. 16 and 17, a single film layer has openings 47 so arranged that when the film is pleated, each opening 47 is covered by a solid part 48. The film is non-adherent to the wound and is made of polyethyleneterephthalate or fine grain embossed polyvinyl chloride and has a thickness of 0.001 to 0.0003 inch. The layers are secured to each other by heat-sealing in spots.
