The structural module, primarily for use in water irrigation, drainage, retention and filtering systems, comprises a load bearing base unit 10 and porous material 15, the base unit having top and bottom walls 11,12 spaced apart by one or more supporting elements 13,20 to define a volume through which liquid may flow via apertures. The porous material is located within the volume and comprises a foamed polymeric material that acts to absorb and retain liquid passing through the apertures. The polymeric material is preferably in the form of a block, which may contain apertures through which supporting elements of the base unit may pass. The polymeric material preferably occupies a horizontally extending layer so as to leave a horizontally extending volume of free space 14 within the base unit or alternatively the polymeric material may fill the entirety of the base unit. The height of the polymeric material is preferably no greater than the maximum vertical distance that water can be absorbed by capillary action. Also claimed are structures formed from one or more structural modules such that there are alternating portions of polymeric material and free space. |
