869,412. Cold separation of gas mixtures. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 19, 1957 [June 19, 1956], No. 19011/56. Class 8(2). Apparatus for the production of deuteriumenriched hydrogen comprises a distillationcolumn 1, a two-stage heat exchanger 14, 15 in which the hydrogen feed (through 13) to the distillation column passes counter-current to deuterium-depleted hydrogen leaving the distillation column along conduits 20, 24, a refrigeration circuit (defined below), and means, e.g. the conduit 16, whereby a fraction of the deuteriumdepleted hydrogen leaving the distillation column 1 and passing countercurrently to the feed is fed to the hottest point, e.g. the compressor 2, of the refrigeration circuit. The refrigeration circuit comprises at least three heat exchangers in which deuterium-depleted hydrogen from column 1 passes countercurrently to deuterium-depleted hydrogen returning to the column and at least two expansion turbines connected between the heat exchangers in the return side of the circuit. In the refrigeration circuit shown, part of the deuterium-depleted hydrogen leaving the column 1 along conduit 20 returns along a conduit 21, through a heat exchanger 19, then heat exchangers 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, then a compressor 2, then alternately through heat exchangers 3 to 6 (reversely) and turbines 8 to 10 in succession, and then partly through a turbine 11 and a conduit 22 to the top of the column and partly through heat exchanger 7, a boiler 12, heat exchanger 19 and a valve V 4 to the top of the column. Product deuterium-rich hydrogen leaves the column by a conduit 27 and heat exchangers 3 to 7. The " fraction " above referred to, after having passed through 14, 15 by conduits not shown, is fed through a conduit 16 to the inlet of compressor 2. |
