The method involves determining a transfer function from a deviation e.g. angular deviation, between a reference position and a calibrating position and from control variables for moving a printing table (14). The function is determined without depending on an exact position of position detection devices (21) e.g. charge-coupled device camera, at the printing table. The devices are controlled in a calibrating phase. A pass mark on a substrate (16) is detected by each detection device. Deviation of the calibrating position with respect to the reference position is detected by the devices.
