A method and apparatus for channel estimation is described. The method (400) includes receiving (420) an OFDM signal containing pilot sub-carriers, calculating (440) a transmission channel response based on the pilot subcarriers, deriving (450) a time delay characteristic based on the transmission channel response, and selecting (470) interpolation filter coefficients in response to determining the maximum delay due to the channel response. The apparatus (200) includ es a n extraction block (220) for separating subcarriers containing reference data and for determining the effect of the transmission channel on the separated sub-carriers, an interpolation circuit (230) for outputting an estimate of the effect of the transmission channel, and a controller (250) for altering the characteristics of the interpolation circuit (230) in response to the effect of the transmission channel.
