An ionising-radiation-responsive composition is disclosed comprising a luminescent material (110), the luminescent material being responsive to ionising radiation to produce optical energy in at least one wavelength band, a biologically active material (410), and a photosensitive bioactivity-adjusting material (404) disposed to provide an inhibition of biological activity of the biologically active material at a first inhibition level, the photosensitive bioactivity-adjusting material being responsive to optical energy in the aforementioned at least one wavelength band to provide an inhibition of biological activity of the biologically active material at a second inhibition level which is less than the first inhibition level. The ionising radiation may be hard X-ray or extreme ultraviolet radiation, and the biologically active material may be a pharmaceutical agent, a receptor ligand or an enzyme inhibitor. Methods using the compositions are also claimed. |
