An apparatus for and method of controlling a power train is provided to prevent a torque applied to an output shaft from being deteriorated, so reducing a shock generated in changing speed. A control device of a power train comprises an auto transmission(2000) and a driving source(1000). The auto transmission is down shifted from a first stage to a second stage by releasing a hook. The output torque of the driving source increases during down shifting of the auto transmission. In down shifting, the increasing amount degradation of the output torque of the driving source is started or finished.
