Aluminium and iron can be extracted from materials such as rock, dry soil and dry clays bearing aluminium silicate and forms of iron by dissolving the material in molten sodium hydroxide, preferably in a nickel or iron pot, allowing the melt to cool, dissolving the melt in water, neutralising the solution formed by addition of acid to precipitate aluminium hydroxide [from which aluminium can be recovered by conventional electrolytic processes], filtering to remove the precipitate, acidifying the filtrate with HCI to precipitate iron oxide [from which iron can be recovered by conventional smelting processes]. The aluminium-bearing material may be flint, granite or basalt. |
