The invention comprises dipicryl sulphone in the form of monoclinic crystals, and a process for the production of such crystals by crystallizing the sulphone from nitric acid, of concentration above 88%, at a temperature above 38 DEG C., and separating the crystals from the mother-liquor at a temperature above 38 DEG C. The monoclinic form of dipicryl sulphone is free-flowing and has a higher bulk-density than the well-known orthorhombic form. Furthermore, the monoclinic form has a greater explosive strength, and a higher thermal-stability. In an example, a mixture of dipicryl sulphide, chromium trioxide and 95% nitric acid was heated at reflux temperature for half-hour, during which dipicryl sulphone was precipitated to give a suspension. A small quantity of water was added to the suspension ; and it was cooled to 40 DEG C., and then filtered. The solid sulphone was washed with hot water, and dried. The product consisted of dipyramidal crystals melting (with decomposition) at 335 DEG C.-345 DEG C., and having a bulk-density of 1,1 gram per cubic centimetre.
|
