A character input method is provided to enable a user to select vowels based on the way of pushing a consonant button, thereby inputting characters more conveniently and efficiently. Each portable terminal has a character array plate which is an input UI(User Interface). The character array plate consists of consonant buttons arranged on a keypad or touch pad(S11). When a specific consonant button is pressed, a portable terminal displays the selected consonant on a display unit(S13). While the consonant button is being pressed, the direction in which a user pushes the consonant button is detected(S14). According to the pushing direction and the number of times the pushing operation is sensed, respectively different vowels are selected.
