A method and an apparatus for programming and reading nonvolatile memory cells are provided to prevent the break down of data by the high temperature. A nonvolatile memory cell(21a) is provided. The nonvolatile memory cell is reversibly switched between the first state and the second state. The irreversible programming signal(IIRP) is applied to the nonvolatile memory cell. The nonvolatile memory cell is not switched in response to the irreversible programming signal between the first state and the second state. The irreversible programming signal comprises the irreversible programmed current.
