A portable terminal having a smart card and a method for storing data thereof are provided to increase the efficiency of the usage of a smart card, which has limited capacity, by storing the information as to items which are re-designated at a region of the smart card. The file at which a residual region exists are indicated by searching the rest residual region of each file when be requested the confirmation of the residual region of the smart card(S401). When a specific item is selected, the item is re-designated to a specific file among the indicated files(S403, S405). The information of the specific item to be inputted is stored at the re-designated file(S407).
