A method for recognizing a sub display in a portable terminal and the portable terminal therefor are provided to use various kind sub displays in the portable terminal, thereby easily using various functions. A voltage level change is detected by monitoring a sub display interface(S203). When a voltage level change related to sub display mounting is detected, a control signal for checking a kind of a display is transmitted to a sub display through the sub display interface(S205). A kind of the sub display is checked by analyzing a response signal in response to the transmission of the control signal(S209).
