A method and an apparatus for detecting a safe distance are provided to maintain a safe distance in vehicles by receiving position information of surrounding vehicles with a wireless communication network on a real time. A terminal device(200) such as a navigation is provided. A GPS receiving part(202) receives a satellite signal from an artificial satellite. A speed sensing part(204) senses a speed of vehicles. A vehicle position checking part(206) determines a position of vehicles. A position data generating part(212) generates data for transmitting vehicle position information. A storage part(214) stores the data of the vehicles. A data transmitting/receiving part(216) transmits/receives the data into a wireless mode like a Bluetooth communication module. A key input part(218) receives a Bluetooth operation execution command and a function operation command. An audio output part(220) generates an alarm when the vehicle comes close. A display part(222) displays an alarm message.
