Threads and yarns of synthetic linear polyamides are treated with a dispersion of a fine grained polyamide powder in a solution or emulsion of a polyamide adhesive. The yarns or threads may be composed of polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene - adipamide or poly - o - amino - undecanoic acid and may be in the form of twisted or untwisted endless yarns or monofils or cut staple. The dispersed polyamide may be of the same or different material as the threads and may swell in the adhesive, and may be of mixed polyamides consisting of two or three different polyamide-forming components. The adhesives may be solutions of alcohol-soluble mixed polyamides, polyamides from dilinolenic acid and diamines made soluble by subsequent treatment with formaldehyde, or methylol or alkoxymethyl polyamides; adhesives from polyisocyanates; mixtures of resorcinol and pyrocatchol with propionic aldehyde; polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl formal, polyvinyl butyral and phenol-aldehyde adhesives. The dispersion may also contain a protective colloid, e.g. a non-ionic condensation product of ethylene oxide, or a dispersing agent. In examples: (1) poly-e -caprolactam yarn is treated with a solution of a polyamide from dilinolenic acid and ethylene diamine in a toluene-isopropanol mixture in which is suspended a powder of poly-e -caprolactam; (2) polycaprolactam yarn is sized with an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate having poly-e -caprolactam dispersed therein, after which it is heated to 300 DEG C.; (3) a monofil of polyhexamethylene adipamide is treated with a methanol solution of a resorcinolpropionic aldehyde adhesive having dispersed therein a powdered mixed polyamide of hexamethylene adipamide and caprolactam.
