An extrusion machine comprises a cylinder 12 having a breaker plate 26 perpendicular to the cylinders aperture and a screw 18 whose end is close to the breaker plate 26 and forms therewith one or more acute angles. The breaker plate 26 has apertures 26 and a screen 38. The end of the screw 18 may form a single angle with the breaker plate, Fig. 5 (not shown) or may form a double angle having a joining edge 56 which "wipes" the face of the breaker plate. The joining edge 56 may continue to the inner wall of the cylinder by merging with the trailing edge of the flight of the screw and the screw may have two complete flights or, Fig. 4 (not shown), a short flight 64 provided to ensure the continuation of the edge 56. The shaping of the screw end ensures even flow of material through the breaker plate.
